Silver Haired Legislators held annual luncheon in Charleston

The Silver Haired Legislature held its annual luncheon on Friday in Charleston.

It honored a number of people who had taken advantage of state programs in 2012. U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., was on hand to say thank you to those who were fighting for the underserved. "It allowed them to stay in an independent lifestyle with dignity and respect. It's done very well," said Manchin.

The West Virginia Silver Haired Legislature is a model legislature, composed of representatives 60 years of age or older, who are elected from throughout the state by their peers.

Through this program older adults learn about the legislative process and identify solutions to common problems. The SHL is composed of 134 representatives, all 60 years of age or older, who are elected every two years from throughout the state by their peers.

There is a representative in the SHL from each of the state's 55 counties.
