A faculty member at West Virginia
University Institute of Technology has received a $20,000 state grant.
Mingyu Lu will use the money to
purchase scientific instruments for teaching and research.
Lu, an assistant professor of
electrical engineering, received the award for an experimental test bed to
study wireless communication in underground coal mines. The award is a 2013
Instrumentation Grant, awarded by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy
Commission's Division of Science and Research.
"We are extremely proud of Dr. Lu's research and look
forward to his continued scholarly contributions with this award. He is such an
asset to our College," said Zeljko Torbica, WVU Tech dean of the Leonard C.
Nelson College of Engineering & Sciences.
The Instrumentation Grant program
purchases scientific equipment for advanced undergraduate laboratories to encourage
undergraduate students in the state to continue careers in science, math and
engineering.
Funding for the award comes from
the West Virginia Research Challenge Fund, which lays the foundation for many
of the state's competitive grant programs. Since 2005, the state's Research
Challenge Fund has awarded more than $29.7 million for research, supporting 19
higher education institutions across the state.
