Chatham Steel announced closure in South Point, OH

Posted: Updated:

Chatham Steel in South Point, Ohio is closing. The business is located at the The Point, which is an industrial park in South Point.

It employs 25 people. Some of the employees may choose to relocate with the company, but 18 to 20 people will be without jobs according to Chatham Steel officials.

They said on Wednesday that the reason for closing is a downturn in the mining industry. The employees were notified on Monday and Tuesday. Many in the community were not shocked by the announcement. "It was not a huge surprise, but still it's always concerning for the employees. They have some wonderful employees, very competent, very good, very committed, but sometimes the sector they're in just does not have rewards for them," said Dr. Bill Dingus with the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.

The group wants to try to market the 50-thousand square foot building with cranes and office space.
