Spring Valley senior running back and linebacker Elijah Wellman has won the Huff Award, given to the state's top defensive player, as voted on by the members of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Wellman recorded 124 tackles with 11 for loss, including two sacks.

But he's mostly known for his talents in the backfield this year.

Wellman rushed for 1676 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The 6-3, 230 pound back will be headed to West Virginia next year where head coach DanaHolgorsen will use him as a running back.

Wellman helped lead Spring Valley to its first playoff win in program history this past season.

The Timberwolves defeated Wheeling Park, 31-7 in the first round before losing to Cabell Midland in the quarterfinals.
