One man is dead after being shot by police just after midnight, early Saturday morning.
Deputies say Huntington police were conducting a routine patrol along the 3200 block of Riverside Drive, when they discovered what appeared to be an accident between a tractor trailer and a small vehicle in a gravel lot near the Wickline bridge.
When the officer pulled up to the scene, he was confronted by a man armed with a knife and a security guard from the nearby Special Metals facility.
The man with the knife began getting aggressive and confrontational toward the security guard.
In response, the police officer fired several rounds from his service weapon, striking and killing the suspect.
The security guard was unharmed.
Huntington Police Chief Holbrook identified the deceased as Joshua Johnie Emerson, 32, of Hamilton, Ala.
Huntington Police Criminal Investigation Bureau and Cabell County Sheriff's Department are investigating.
