Holiday travelers prepare for snow, ice

If you traveled to somewhere for Christmas, that means you eventually need to travel back to where you came from.

But with freezing cold rain and snow headed our way, those return trips could become difficult.

"We're just afraid of being stranded at the airport," said Frank Cepeda, who is visiting Charleston with his family.

Cepeda and his family flew here from Texas, and their return flight is scheduled for Friday.

"I was afraid of the snow," Cepeda said. "But not the rain that could delay our flight."

So even before the first flake fell, Cepeda called into his office and made an emergency plan.

"I told [my boss] to have someone to work for me on Saturday in case I'm not there," he said.

Trish Cendada said she drove to Charleston from Morgantown.

"My parents and my husband's parents live down here in Charleston," Cendada said. "We just wanted to have a dinner and then spend the night, and then in the morning, we'd go."

But when she heard the Morgantown area could see ice as early as Wednesday, Cendada said she decided to head back home right after dinner at Shoney's.

"We'd rather be home and be safe," Cendada said. "We're not worried, but our parents are worried about us. So we're gonna hit the road home."

The Nancarrows live in Kanawha County. They said they're here to stay for the remainder of the holiday season, but they're already planning ahead for bad weather...and they said everyone else should, too.

"Prepare as if your electric would shut off because it's what's gonna happen," said Edith Nancarrow, of Cross Lanes. "A lot of people around here are hunters, so they should have stoves and should cook outside if they have to."
