Parts of West Virginia are still feeling the effects of hurricane-turned-superstorm Sandy, and the U.S. Department of Labor is helping out.

The DOL has granted a $300,000 National Emergency Grant to WorkForce West Virginia. The grant will create approximately 35 temporary jobs for eligible dislocated workers to help with the cleanup and recovery efforts as a result of the storm. Sandy hit in late October and caused widespread power outages and dumped up to several feet of snow in the eastern West Virginia mountains.

The grant targets Barbour, Preston, Tucker, Upshur and Webster counties, which were previously declared federal disaster areas. The funds will be used to provide temporary employment on projects to assist with cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation and reconstruction of destroyed public structures, facilities and land in the affected areas. Money also will be used to deliver humanitarian aid and safety assistance.
