The town of Rainelle will celebrate 100 years in April, and town officials are starting now to plan the party.
Mayor Andrea "Andy" Pendleton is inviting town residents to attend the first ad hoc 100th Anniversary Celebration Committee meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 in the town hall's council room.
Rainelle was incorporated April 25, 1913. The centennial anniversary will begin with a celebration from April 25-27, but the anniversary will be celebrated throughout 2013.
"Rainelle's very beginning was based on optimism about the future," Pendleton said. "Let's show ourselves and the world that on the 100th anniversary, we are still carrying on."
Pendleton urges town residents to bring all of their ideas to the meeting. She suggested businesses, churches, civic organizations, government agencies and individuals might want to emphasize their origins. Volunteers will decide the activities and the celebration's theme; however, Pendleton suggested volunteers might want to consider old fashioned days, tours of historic buildings including walking tours of the Sears kit homes, a golf tournament, bike rides, walk and run competitions, geo-caching, parades and reunions.
