A former and a current West Virginia University employee have filed a federal lawsuit saying the university's board of governors and others failed to restore their reputations following an academic integrity investigation that didn't find misconduct.
New River Community and Technical College is one step closer to appointing a new president.
The school's board of governors has named two finalists for the presidency after an extensive national search. Following a board meeting Jan. 3, board chairwoman Leslie Baker announced Debra Teachman and Marshall Washington as the two finalists.
Teachman is the vice president for academic affairs at New Mexico University Alamagordo and previously served as interim CEO/president of the same school. Teachman earned her doctorate in English literature from University of California-Davis as well as a masters in English literature from Northern Illinois University-DeKalb and an associate of arts degree in library technology from Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois.
Washington currently serves as the vice president of the Lancaster campus of Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania. He previously served as vice president of student services at Kellogg Community College in Ohio. He earned a doctorate in education studies with a specialization in educational leadership and higher education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a masters degree in education from Winona State University in Minnesota and a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Ohio Wesleyan University.
Both finalists will participate in open public forums on each of New River's campuses later this month. The dates, times and locations will be announced soon. The forums are open to faculty, staff, administrators, students and the public. The forums will include a brief introduction of each candidate followed by a question and answer session. Comment forms will be available to attendees and collected at the end of each forum then given to New River Board of Governors members for review.
Either Teachman or Marshall will replace Ted Spring, who left New River in November to become president of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. Merle Dempsey currently serves as the interim president and will remain in that position until a new person is hired.
New River Community and Technical College is based in Beckley and serves nine counties in Southern West Virginia.
