PITTSBURGH (AP)
- An ongoing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study on natural gas drilling
and its potential for groundwater contamination has gotten tentative praise so
far from both industry and environmental groups.
But a 275-page progress report in December shows that the
EPA doesn't plan to address one contentious issue - how often drinking water
contamination might occur.
Both the industry and environmental groups agree
contamination can occur but they disagree on how often, and many were hoping
the EPA would weigh in on this.
The American Petroleum Institute, an industry lobby, says
the study is "a first step" toward collaboration and stakeholder
involvement.
Environmental group Earthworks welcomes the EPA study but
has some concerns.
