West Virginia State Police said John Edward Dempsey, 37, is a suspect in the murder of a Logan County man.
John Dempsey is on the loose in the Logan County area and is possibly armed and dangerous, according to Sgt. M.S. Lively, with the West Virginia State Police. He is described as 5'10", weighing 160 lbs., with short brown hair and blue eyes.
Police found the body of Grover Morrison in his home on Stratton Street in downtown Logan on Tuesday evening, according to Trooper Glasswell with State Police.
Troopers said they responded to a call on 605 Stratton Street just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. That's where they found Morrison's body. Police said they're still investigating how and when Morrison was killed.
While investigators could not provide Morrison's age, they said the man was in his early 80s.
Sgt. Lively said troopers recovered Morrison's car, a 2012 Buick, in Man earlier Tuesday evening.
Fifteen-year-old Wesley Jones said he lives behind Morrison's house. The freshman at Logan High School said the news of the murder surprises him.
"It's pretty safe," Wesley said. "Nothing really happens here. I walk home, I walk past this house every day."
Others said they've seen crime on Stratton Street spike in recent years.
"The street's went to chaos the last 15 years," said one neighbor, who's lived on Stratton for 30 years. "It just went to hell."
And some neighbors said they never thought a murderer would target Morrison.
"We would sit on the porch and talk to him," said one woman, who watched the scene unfold from next door. "And on the Fourth of July, we'd watch fireworks. He was a private person. But anytime you needed help, he'd be there to help you."
