UC-Beckley ushers in a new era of higher learning for southern WV

Tuesday, Jan. 8 marked the day in which UC-Beckley became official.

It started with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. and ended with an open house.

UC-Beckley President Dr. Ed Welch said a lot of hard work has gone into this transition of schools, and is finally about to pay off.

"It involves having a vision about what might be able to be possible in Beckley for the University of Charleston and for the students of Mountain State University," said Dr. Welch. "And it involves faith and commitment that, yes it can really happen."

Dr. Welch said the events are the culmination of all the hard work. He said it's only the beginning, not just for new students of UC-Beckley, but for former students of Mountain State University as well.

"Students who had been students at MSU can meet with advisors and work on transition of courses and learn what they need to do and we are very anxious to talk to community members."

Regional President Jerry Forster said there's a lot of excitement and buzz about the changes.

He explained the numbers of students and how many they would like to eventually have.

"We're happy that we may have 400 or 500 students already talking about the courses here in Beckley and online, so it's a good start. But we certainly want to build those numbers quite a bit in the fall and next year." said Forster.

The University will begin spring semester classes online classes Jan. 14, and residential courses begin Jan. 21.
