CHARLESTON, WV — West Virginia's Division of Culture and History will celebrate the traditional music of West Virginia on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25, at the Culture Center during the 37th annual Vandalia Gathering. The family-friendly event is free.

The Laurel Mountain Coffeehouse Series continues at Preston Community Arts Center, 123 S. Price Street, Kingwood with an evening of entertainment by Ernie Hawkins, internationally renowned acoustic guitar virtuoso, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

For many years Hawkins has been playing concerts, clubs, festivals, colleges, museums and other celebrations in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1947, he first learned country guitar, mandolin, banjo and bones from a man named Pete who worked on his uncle's farm. Pete had played with the Lilly Brothers and had rambled around the country, taking a 30-year detour down whiskey lane that landed him in a cabin on the farm as property caretaker and a primary musical mentor to Hawkins.

Admission is $10 at the door. The Preston Arts Cafe will be open prior to the show and at intermission.  The arts center gallery filled with handcrafted works of art by area artists and artisans will open at 6:30 p.m. and the door to the coffeehouse will open at 7 p.m.
