South Charleston Middle School remembered a 13-year-old student whose life was cut short by asthma.

The classmates of Lauren Swann held a candlelight vigil on Friday night and released balloons with messages to Lauren.

Lauren died after having an asthma attack during Christmas break. According to the Centers for Disease Control, deaths from asthma are rare among children, with under 200 reported annually nationwide.

Students said they wanted to do something for Lauren and her family to show how much they loved her and how much she will be missed. "She was so helpful and generous. She would always help me in reading," said fellow classmate, Lauren Falbo. "She always had a big smile on her face and whenever you were having a bad day or anything she was there to cheer you up," said another classmate, Erin Dodd.

There will be an art award in her name at South Charleston Middle School. Students said that Lauren taught them to live life to the fullest because you never know what's going to happen.
