Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Steve Miller has retired after three years of service.

Deputy Commissioner Steven Dale will assume the role of acting commissioner, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Jan. 15.

"I wish Joe the best in his upcoming, and much deserved, retirement from public service," Tomblin said. "During his years as commissioner, Joe has remained dedicated to improving technology at the division in order to enhance customer service. I'm grateful for his service and commitment to West Virginians."

Miller served as commissioner since 2009 and previously held that same position from 1997 to 2001. While Miller served as commissioner, the DMV modernized its licensing and vehicle systems, created the driver's license veterans designation and most recently implemented the federal licensing system known as REAL ID.

Dale has been with the DMV for more than 30 years and has served a variety of roles, including management positions in Drivers Services, Vehicle Services and Management Services. He earned bachelors and master's degrees from Marshall University and a master's degree from West Virginia University. In his most recent position, Dale was responsible for the DMV's Legislative Program.
