est Virginia's House of Delegates faces a momentous decision after Speaker Rick Thompson departs for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's Cabinet: choosing a new leader will help set the stage for 2014, when Republicans aim to wipe out the Democrats' ebbing majority.

West Virginia Republican Party Chairman Conrad Lucas announced Jan. 16 that William Ward Wyatt has been named the party's new executive director.

Wyatt, a Texas native who came to West Virginia to manage Kent Leonhardt's close but unsuccessful race for Agriculture Commissioner, will start in the next month, prior to the legislative session.

"Ward will be an incredible asset to lead our team," Lucas said in a news release. "Ward brings a wealth of knowledge of modern campaign tactics as well as strong experience working with state legislators that will be invaluable as we look to the 2014 election cycle."

Wyatt previously served as an aide to Rep. Stefani Carter, R-Tex., who was the first female, African-American Republican in the House. Wyatt also served as a legislative aide to Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, chairman of the Texas House Ways & Means Committee.

Wyatt graduated from the University of Texas-Austin with a degree in government and business. His father, Joseph P. Wyatt Jr., represented the Texas's 14th Congressional District.

"I appreciate the chairman's confidence in me to oversee the day-to-day operations of the WVGOP," Wyatt said in a news release. "The future begins now, and I'm excited to bring my energy and skill set to assist Chairman Lucas in strengthening the West Virginia Republican Party so we can accomplish our goals for 2014."
