Sam Cann will represent the people of the 12th Senatorial District, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Jan. 16.
Cann, a Democrat who most recently served in the House of Delegates representing Harrison County, was appointed to the Senate to fill the vacancy created when Sen. Joseph Minard, also D-Harrison, resigned to serve as Senate Clerk.
Cann's appointment is effective immediately.
"From his first day in the House of Delegates, Sam has worked hard for the people of Harrison County, and I am confident he will continue to do so as state senator," Tomblin said.
Cann was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1994 and is the senior member of the Harrison County delegation. In the House, he has served as chairman of the Committee on Small Business and Economic Development and co-chairman of the Joint Committee on Economic Development. He also served as president of the Independent Oil and Gas Association.
Cann is a graduate of West Virginia University. He has served on the WVU Alumni Association board of directors, and was a member of the West Virginia Special Olympics board of directors. He also has been active with Knights of Columbus.
He and his wife, Phyllis, have five children and five grandchildren.
