FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A Fort Campbell soldier killed in a firefight in Afghanistan in 2010 has received the Distinguished Service Cross, the military's second highest honor, for his actions to save a dozen Afghan Army soldiers during the attack.
Staff Sgt. Eric B. Shaw, of Exeter, Maine, is credited with rushing to the aid of the Afghans during a fight with insurgents in Kunar province in June 2010. The award citation says the Afghans had been separated from Shaw's squad and were exposed to enemy fire. Shaw was killed while leading them back to safety.
Gen. David M. Rodriguez, commander of the Army's U.S. Forces Command, presented the award to Shaw's wife and mother during a ceremony Wednesday at the post on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line.
