NRA signing up members in return for free admission to WV Hunting & Fishing Show

Posted: Updated:

One of the biggest outdoors show in the region is taking place this weekend at the Charleston Civic Center.

The 27th annual West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show features everything the hunter or fisherman in your life might want to see to help get him or her fired up for better weather.

The show includes a big buck display, vendors showing off and selling the latest gear and auctions for hunting and fishing trips. The show typically draws about 15,000 people.

If you want to get into the hunting and fishing show, you have two choices. You can pay $8 per person for a ticket or you can sign up for the National Rifle Association (NRA) and get your ticket paid for.

A number of gun owners were signing up on Friday evening. Some of them are longtime members of the NRA and others are joining the gun rights group for the first time.

The NRA has been a vocal participant in debate over gun violence in America - in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, CT.

An NRA member at the hunting and fishing show said something has to be done about the violence and guns need to be part of the conversation. "I believe in guns and I believe in protecting the guns, but man can they hurt us," said Larry Fogarty of Charleston.

The West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show continues through Sunday at the Charleston Civic Center.
