Huntington Area Food Bank has issued a statement following the arrest of the former director.

The West Virginia State Police arrested Leigh Anne Zappin on Friday.

Zappin is accused of embezzling nearly $24,000 from the food bank.

The statement reads, "The Huntington Area Food Bank's Board of directors and employees have cooperated fully in this investigation and will continue to assist prosecutors as this case moves to through the court system. Throughout this unfortunate time, The Food Bank has and will continue to serve its member agencies and the nearly 100,000 people who need food each month in the Tri-State area. Although this is a difficult time for our organization, the need of those we serve remains unchanged."

Zappin is charged with eight counts of forgery, eight counts of uttering and one count of embezzlement, according to police.

The investigation began in October 2012.
