Athens County Sheriff's deputies went to an Athens, Ohio home on State Route 550 just after 6 p.m. Friday after receiving information that a fugitive was hiding at the residence.

Adam Ross, who has a warrant out for his arrest, left the house just before deputies arrived. When law enforcement arrived at the house they found James E. Shaffer, 28, of The Plains, Ohio who also had an active warrant from Athens Municipal Court.

Shaffer attempted to escape through a back window of the residence but was stopped. Shaffer then fled out a front door of the mobile home and was captured by deputies as he fled the residence.

At the time that he was caught, Shaffer was in possession of a unit dose of heroin. He will be charged with Resisting Arrest and possession of drugs.

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, deputies executed a search warrant at the same residence and seized heroin, paraphernalia and money. Deputies arrested Jerry Smith, 29, Kristen Swiney, 23, and Jason Smith, 31.

This is the third instance within a years period in which drugs were involved.

The residence has been known to house drug traffickers and has been the target of an investigation dating to last year when a then resident, Jason Shaffer, currently in prison for trafficking in heroin, was arrested by the Narcotics Enforcement Team. Their investigation has confirmed that multiple people have been selling heroin from the residence.
