Posted: Updated:

UPDATE:

Athens County Sheriff's deputies say two men called 911 after they noticed a vehicle approximately 300 feet over the embankment on Coal Run Road. One of the men had seen a social media posting about a stolen car and thought this might be it.

After checking the license plates, they confirmed it was the stolen vehicle.

Deputies report "the vehicle key was still in the ignition, the vehicle was in gear, and a sludge hammer was pressed against the gas pedal, which led to the vehicle going over the embankment."

Deputies were able to retrieve prints from the vehicle and an investigation is underway.

Athens County Sheriff's deputies are look for a stolen vehicle and are investigating several incidents that happened along Poston and Hartman roads in The Plains, Ohio.

Just before 10 a.m. Sunday Jan. 20, a resident of an apartment building on Poston Road reported her car, a red 2002 Toyota Corolla, with a license plate FEE4291 had been stolen overnight. Other residents also reported some of their vehicles had been broken into and items had been stolen.

The stolen vehicle was left unlocked and a broken key was left in the ignition. The vehicle has a dent in the rear passenger side fender. Deputies say the other vehicles broken into had been left unlocked.

Later on Sunday morning, a resident on State Route 691 reported their garage door had been damaged and traces of red paint had been left on the door.

Deputies believe that the stolen vehicle was used to try and open the garage door, before an alarm was activated and scared off the intruders.

The vehicle has not yet been recovered and the Sheriff's Office is requesting anyone with information contact 911.
