Huntington City Mission raises white flag to keep homeless warm

Posted: Updated:

Bitter cold temperatures can be dangerous especially for the homeless.

Workers at the Huntington City Mission say that when the temp drops below 41 degrees, the white flag is raised signaling that all are welcome.

Families stood outsideMonday afternoon waiting for workers to let their families come in out of the cold.

Mission workers say they have plenty of room for everyone and offer a place of refuge from freezing weather.

We spoke to one family member who says she's thankful to have a place to go.

"One of us as to go out and one has to stay with the kids during the day but if its over 41 degrees one of us has to leave and come back about 4:30, and where we don't know anything around here we just go to the library or try to find something to do to get out of the cold" Christine Stevens said.

The mission's dining hall was also open so people could have a hot meal.
