Ironton firefighters are called to a house fire in bitter cold temperatures Tuesday night.
Firefighters got a call of a house on fire in the 2600 block of South Sixth street just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
When they got there flames were shooting out of the attic and roof.
Two dogs were rescued from inside the home.
They got the fire out, but no one was home at the time to notify.
The fire chief says the homeowners were at a local hospital when the fire started.
He says fighting fires in cold weather is tough and can be dangerous.
"Of course we use water to fight the fire, when it hits the fire it changes to steam and it can produce ice and snow around the environment we're working in even though the weather's clear and cold outside so this all becomes a hazard to the firefighters." Chief Tom Runyon said.
He says the fire appears to be electrical and was contained to the attic, but the home suffered heavy smoke and water damage.
