SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Oil and gas development damaged the water supplies of at least 161 Pennsylvania homes, farms, churches and businesses between 2008 and the fall of 2012, according to state records obtained by a newspaper.
Two West Virginia mine complexes are resuming operations after halting operations in October.
Mechel Bluestone said it is reopening its Justice Energy and Dynamic Energy open pit mining complexes. The complexes are expected to produce around 135,000 tones a month.
"Mining at these Mechel Bluestone facilities were temporarily halted in late October 2012 due to an accumulation of coal inventories," the Russia-based company announced Jan. 24. "Mechel Bluestone's washing plants continued operating and all obligations under pre-existing contracts were met in full."
Jim Justice, the current owner of The Greenbrier, sold Bluestone Coal in 2009. The Russian company purchased the coal business for more than $436 million cash and more than $80 million in preferred shares in Mechel.
Mechel Bluestone is headquartered in Beckley.
In October, the company also idled the Keystone mining complex. The company said it would resume mining at other Mechel Bluestone facilities "as market conditions warrant." A warmer winter last year, low natural gas prices and other factors suppressed U.S. demand for coal.
Mechel's release did not state whether or not the employees of those mines were to return to the reopened mines, or exactly when the mines are to open.
Mechel is involved in mining, steel, ferroalloy and power production.
