Lawrence county, Ohio officers called to shooting standoff

Posted: Updated:

Lawrence County Ohio deputies are called to the scene of a man firing shots at a house.

Officers say they got a call about a man driving by and shooting at a house on Hog Run Road near Ironton around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sheriff deputies, State Highway Patrol, along with Ironton, Coal Grove and South Point police all responded to the scene.

They say the man pulled into a driveway, got out and shot at the house with a handgun, then grabbed a high-powered rifle and fired three shots three at a Coal Grove police cruiser, striking it at least once.

The man then got back into the truck, where police say he fatally shot himself.

The Sheriff says officers worked together to keep neighbors safe.

"The residents while the situation was unfolding, were coming out of their houses to see what was going on and you're just verbally telling them to get back in your house or move down the road. It's a matter of verbally communicating with them that this is not a place they want to be right now." Lawrence county Sheriff Jeff Lawless said.

No one else was injured.

The suspect's name is not being released until family members have been notified.
