Philippi, WV - The Golden Eagles got back to their winning ways Monday
night in a huge matchup against Alderson Broaddus, earning a 10-point
victory at Rex Pyles Arena, 69-59.
Even more important, Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.)
seemed to finally find his shooting stroke hitting on seven of his nine
attempts from the floor including knocking down four 3-pointers on his
way to a game-high 19 points. In Faulkner's previous three games he was
only able to hit on three of 14 attempts from behind the arc, quite
unusual for the sharpshooting Sr. from Sandyhook.
A slow start from Charleston(13-4, 9-4 WVIAC) plagued them early on in
the contest and trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but
used a late run in last 5 minutes of the half to eventually tie the game
before Faulkner hit one of his four triples as the horn sounded with UC
holding a 34-31 advantage.
The game remained close throughout the second half with the Battlers
jumping in front of Charleston five minutes into the half, but the
Golden Eagles were determined to to get out of Philippi with a victory.
That lead just briefly lasted before UC got back ahead and wouldn't
relinquish the lead the remainder of the game, with the Golden Eagles
getting back in the win column with a 69-59 victory.
Charleston was lead by Faulkner's 19 points but got solid contributions from Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, N.C.) (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Fred Simpson (Bronx, NY), who came off the bench to score 9 points and pull down 7 boards.
The Golden Eagles return to action Thursday night on the road in a
rematch against Fairmont State, who defeated UC back on December 15 by a
score of 71-61.
