Charleston Police have arrested the man they said stabbed a University of Charleston football player early Sunday morning.

Roland William Willis II, 22, was arrested around midnight.

He has been charged with three counts of malicious wounding, according to the Charleston Police Criminal Investigations Division.

Detectives said Williams was taken into custody "without incident".

Police said Williams stabbed Kevin Clemens, 18, multiple times outside of Impulse nightclub.

According to newly released court documents, the men bumped into each other inside of the club.  The fight continued outside of the nightclub, where witnesses said they saw Willis stab Clemens multiple times in the stomach.

Clemens was rushed to Charleston Area Medical Center and had surgery for a laceration on his liver, according to court documents.

Impulse nightclub has been a huge issue for police in the past.

"This is not the first incident where there's been violence. There's been several times where it spills outside. The clientele out there is a pretty rough clientele," Cooper said.

According to the University of Charleston's football roster, Clemens is a freshman linebacker for the team.

On Monday, the Alcohol Beverage Control Administration suspended the nightclub's liquor license for 10 days.

The city of Charleston is also exploring its legal options to see if it can shut down the nightclub.

Willis was formally arraigned on these charges Tuesday morning.

He is in the South Central Regional Jail with bail set at $50,000, cash only.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 6.
