UPDATE: Wed., January 30 5:56pm

According to a news release from Ohio University, the Athens campus will re-open Thursday, Jan. 31. The gunman is still at large. The Ohio University Police Department urges the public to contact their office if they have any information regarding this situation.

 

 


 

UPDATE: Wed., January 30 2:12pm

Police continue to search the area for the armed fugitive on the campus of Ohio University in Athens. Officials tell 13News all students have been told to return to their residences and all non-essential employees should return home unless notified by the school. Wednesday night's mens' basketball game against Eastern Michigan has been canceled due to the campus closure.

We have reached out to members of all law enforcement agencies investigating the situation as well as university officials; they have declined an on-camera interview.

UPDATE: Wed., January 30 12:23pm

According to members of the Ohio University Police Department, additional officers have been added to the Athens campus. Right now, police continue to search for the gunman.  Ohio University President Roderick McDavis announced that all classes on the Athens campus will be canceled until Thursday, Jan. 31. as a precautionary measure.

ORIGNIAL STORY: Wed., January 30 10:45 a.m.


Police in Ohio are searching for an armed fugitive near an area university.

According to investigators with the Ohio University Police Department in Athens, an armed robbery occurred at the Station Street Apartments just before 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect was able to flee the scene.

The gunman is described as an African-American male, approximately 6'1." He was last seen wearing a blue hoodie and blue jeans and carrying a handgun.  

He was last seen fleeing toward Station Street and Stocker Center.

Ohio University did not go into a lock down situation. However, students were notified via text message around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
