A Mason County woman drowned Wednesday January 30, when the water level outside her home rose so high that she was swept away by the current.
According to Mason County Sheriff Powers, Jessica Harris, 50, of Beech Fork Road in Leon, W. Va., was trying to cross the river outside her home and get to her car to go to work when she was caught by the current.
Family members began to worry when they came home later that evening.
Law enforcement was alerted around 9 p.m. and deputies joined State Police and the Leon Fire Department on their search around 10:30 p.m.
The search continued for six hours. Sheriff's deputies eventually found her body approximately 100 yards away from her home.
Sheriff Powers says the investigation is ongoing and there will be an autopsy, but they do not suspect foul play.
