House Minority Leader Tim Armstead, R-Kanawha has selected Delegate Daryl Cowles, R-Morgan, as minority whip for the 81st Legislature.

Cowles will work with members of the Republican caucus and House leadership to advance policies and bills through the legislative process.

Cowles said he appreciates the support he has received from Armstead and caucus members.

"I look forward to working with our team and the House leadership on common sense solutions to our problems," Cowles said in a statement.

Armstead said he thinks Cowles will be an "outstanding minority whip" because he understands the state's budget and recognizes challenges facing the state.

"Daryl has worked tirelessly to make our state a better place to live and work," Armstead said in a statement. "As the minority whip, he will play a key leadership role in advancing the conservative policies and initiatives that the people of West Virginia want to see become a reality in our state. I am excited to work with Daryl to improve our economy, put our people back to work and enhance the quality of life for all West Virginians."

Cowles will have more Republicans to wrangle than ever before. After the Nov.6 general election, Republicans gained 11 House seats, giving them more members than at any time in modern history. A total of 46 of 100 delegates are Republican.

"In my six years in the House, our caucus has seen a net gain of 18 seats—from 28 members to 46 members," Cowles said. "Our input on policy and legislation has grown tremendously. I am eager for the challenge. There are many opportunities to improve our state government for the benefit of our citizens."

In addition to serving as minority whip, Cowles also will serve on the House Rules Committee. He also will serve as a member of the House Finance Committee, minority chairman of the Committee on Roads and Transportation, minority vice-chairman of the Political Subdivisions Committee and member of Health and Human Resources Committee, which recently was named a standing committee.

Because of his promotion to minority whip, Cowles' office assignment has moved to the main office of the House minority, located off House Chambers on the second floor of the Capitol. His mailing address is now Room 258M, Capitol Complex, Charleston, W.Va., 25305. His email is daryl.cowles@wvhouse.gov and his phone number is 304-340-3177.

Cowles will begin his fourth two-year term when the 81st Legislature begins Feb. 13.
