LOGAN, West Virginia -
A rescue group in Logan County called Saving Animals from Euthanasia or SAFE has been working with Deanna Osborne since September 2012 to help her find homes for the numerous dogs on her property.
Osborne lives behind the Logan County pound. Volunteers said she frequently took in the animals that people dumped outside the pound during the overnight hours. She asked the rescue group to help her when she realized that she was getting overwhelmed.
SAFE was able to find homes for 40 dogs. They also took dog food and water to Osborne to help her care for the animals.
But a string of recent complaints about the remaining animals prompted humane officers and the Logan County Sheriff's Department to get involved.
Wednesday they asked Osborne to surrender eight of her dogs. They planned to pick up at least two more. That will leave her with under a dozen dogs on her property.
The animals were not emaciated but do need veterinary care according to the humane officer. SAFE and the pound are working to find homes for the dogs. They also need donations for their care. Osborne has not been charged criminally. Both the humane officers and Sheriff Sonya Porter said they are hopeful she will continue to cooperate. Osborne refused a request for an interview.
