A horrific incident in Raleigh County leaves the community asking questions.

Around 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 two state troopers responded to a 911 complaint of a 2-year-old child falling from the window of a trailer in Fairdale.

The child was found at the neighbors house and was then transported to CAMC and died from injuries after 2 a.m.

When enforcement arrived, they found the child at a neighbors house with bruises and possible internal injuries.

The child's biological mother, Brandy Smallwood, was arrested on the scene for neglect. When they found the stepfather, James Green, he was unresponsive due to an apparent pill overdose.

He was then sent to Raleigh General Hospital but was released and then arrested this morning.

Sources tell 59News that both Mr. Green and Mrs. Smallwood are known drug addicts.

A neighbor is surprised to hear of such a tragedy happen in her neighborhood.

"Its a nice neighborhood. it's just shocking what happened, I didn't know anything about it. Everybody around here is friendly," said neighbor Delloris Collins.

The child victim is a twin. The other 2-year-old boy has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services. He had evidence of physical abuse on him as well and the investigation on crimes against him are ongoing.

Sergeant D.W. Bennett said this is a sad reality of the drug problem in our area.

"This speaks to what this epidemic is capable of doing. What it will make one human being do to another human being," Bennett said.

Both suspects are being held in Southern Regional Jail.

Mr. Green will be arraigned Monday morning in Circuit Court. Mrs. Smallwood was arraigned Saturday night.
