WV mom "couponing" to save hundreds of dollars

Posted: Updated:

Mom of three, Brooke Dunn, shops for her family's groceries using little pieces of paper to save her family big money.

"For two hours of work to save $100, I think that's definitely worth it," said Dunn.

Dunn started "couponing" when her family needed the financial boost.

"A couple years ago my husband found out he was losing his job, and I am a stay at home mom, and we just looked at our budget trying to figure out where we could cut costs," Dunn said.

Couponing is worth the effort for her family.  A binder-full cuts around $400 a month off her grocery bill.

"Just like anything in life, we organize for everything, why not organize to save money and shopping?"

She said it's important to know your store, keep up with store sales, and know how your coupons work.

"I say it's like a good card game, saying that your coupons are like cards and you're just waiting for that perfect opportunity to play them," she said.

To save the most money, Brooke said you should wait until an item is already on sale at the store then use your coupon to double up. While I was shopping with Brooke, I spoke to another shopper who coupons for everyone in her family.

"I would cut out coupons for me, my sister, my sister-in-law and my mother," said Better Montgomery.

Brooke thinks couponing is a great idea for anyone. She teaches workshops on the hobby. On this particular trip, Brooke Dunn's bill was around $40. After the cashier scanned her coupons, it ended up being around $20.

"So you saved more than you spend?" I asked.

"Yes, that's always the goal," she replied.

If saving money is a goal of yours.  Brooke Dunn said shopping strategically is the way to go.

Brooke said the Sunday newspaper is a good place to find coupons. She also mentioned web sites like coupons.com and southernsavers.com.
