West Virginia State Police troopers tell 13NEWS that Venus Parton fatally shot her estranged boyfriend, George Bowens, just before noon on Sunday.

The shooting happened at a residence on Huff Creek Highway in the community of Daven.

Bowens suffered a single gunshot wound from a rifle.

Parton is claiming self-defense and went willingly with investigators to be questioned at the State Police detachment in Logan.

State Police said Bowens had been living at the residence on and off.

"There was at least a past relationship and possibly still a relationship," said Sgt. M.S. Lively, with State Police. "It's clear they were together frequently."

Neighbors said the pair rarely stirred trouble and kept to themselves.

"They lived there for about a year," said Conrad Midkaff, who lives next door. "They stayed over there, we stayed over here."

An investigation is underway to determine if the shooting was a homicide or self-defense following a home invasion.

And Sgt. Lively said Sunday's incident should warn all homeowners to secure their property because the consequences could be deadly.

"Residents anywhere, not just here, need to be vigilant and keep their doors locked and windows locked and beware that things like this do happen," Lively said.

Troopers have yet to arrest Parton or charge her with a crime.

It happened in the Davin area of Logan County around 11:40 a.m. Sunday.

According to State Police, a woman fatally shot a man in a possible home invasion situation.

No arrests have been made and there are no active warrants at this time.

State Police tell 13NEWS they are not releasing the names of the parties involved at this time.

Troopers are still investigating the incident right now.

Not many details are being released at the moment.  Stay with 13NEWS for the very latest on the investigation.
