An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution McDowell pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a weapon, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin.
Federal inmate Bryan Kent, 43, had a homemade knife, also known as a 'shank' on him in September 2012, authorities said.
Kent admitted to having the knife on him and said it was intended to be used as a weapon.
He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case was handled by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
