Victim's name released in fatal KRT bus accident

Posted: Updated:

Tragedy unfolded early Thursday morning after a man was hit and killed by a KRT bus in what police are calling a freak accident.

It happened on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Stockton Street.

Police said 40-year-old Joseph Bias tried to cross Fourth Avenue, when a KRT bus turning from Stockton Street hit him.

Five passengers were on the bus when the driver said he stopped because he thought he hit something.

The driver told police he had no idea he actually hit a person.

"This morning the scene was dark, so visibility does play a factor in this," said Cpl. Brian Jones, Charleston Police Department.

Bias died on scene.

The surrounding area was shut down for hours as investigators tried to reconstruct what exactly happened.

KRT assistant general manager Doug Hartley said the driver has years of experience with the company. He said the man is devastated that this happened.

"He's an experienced employee and he's very shaken up," Hartley said.

Hartley said accidents like this are extremely few and far between. He said public transportation is still a very safe way to get around town.

"I've been here 27 plus years and only four instances in that time can I remember an incident with a fatality," he said.

Police said the driver of the bus isn't facing any charges.

None of the passengers on the bus at the time of the accident were injured.
