MORGANTOWN, WV (AP) — The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition is planning a forum on rising utility bills that it's dubbed the Morgantown Power Hour.

The event is 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Morgantown Library.

Organizers say Mon Power is unfairly raising costs to consumers by buying a coal-fired plant from its parent, Ohio-based FirstEnergy, and refusing to invest in energy efficiency.

Chris Shepherd of Energy Efficient West Virginia says two bills pending in the Legislature would encourage energy efficiency.

But Mon Power spokesman Todd Meyers says energy-efficiency programs and reduced demand aren't practical solutions to the significant capacity shortfalls facing Mon Power and Potomac Edison.

He says the proposed purchase of the Harrison Power Station ensures a continued supply of low-cost power.

The Public Service Commission will hold hearings on the deal in May.
