A young male golden eagle was released back into the wild on Tuesday afternoon.
He was found in a trap set for coyote and bobcat near Union, Monroe County, WV on Nov. 14, 2012. The trap broke his middle toe on his left foot. Three Rivers Avian Center has been working since then to heal the injury and to help the eagle, called Golden Boy, regain his stamina so he can be returned to the wild.
Male golden eagles have a 7 foot wingspan and weigh between 7-9 pounds on average. This male, named "Golden Boy", weighs a little more than 8 pounds. Although not common, Golden Eagles can be found in the region all year long. Their main foods are rabbits, o'possums, raccoons, squirrels, snakes, and fresh carrion.
Just prior to his release to Grandview Park in Raleigh County at the Main Overlook, the golden eagle was fitted with a numbered metal band from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to identify him and then a satellite transmitter was placed on his back. The data from the transmitter will be entered into the ongoing Golden Eagle Tracking Study. To learn more about the study, click on this link.
