Charleston, WV – The Golden Eagle men fall to Wheeling
Jesuit for the third time this season, ending their hopes of a WVIAC
Championship.
Charleston would start the quarterfinal matchup hitting efficiently from
the field, especially Humphrey who would score seven of UC's first nine
points. The Golden Eagles would hold a small lead, 14-11, at first
media timeout and things looked promising for Charleston this time
around. Out of the timeout Charleston would hit on back-to-back three's
by Dreher and Faulkner giving UC a nine point lead at the nine minute
mark, 22-13. WJU's Ben Seifert would answer with a three but Lipkins
would come back with a three of his own.
Charleston would force a turnover and convert a layup on the other end
causing the Cardinals to call a timeout. Out of the timeout the
Wheeling would score seven straight to draw within four, Lipkins would
hit a floater in the lane to stop the WJU run. The teams would trade
baskets for the remainder of the half with UC not able to distance
themselves from Jesuit. A banked three by Wheeling with 5 seconds to go
would pull the Cardinals within one at the break, UC leading 37-36.
Lipkins would lead Charleston with 12 points on 5-9 shooting while
Humphrey would contribute 11 points and 5 boards. Charleston would dish
out 11 assists on 14 made buckets while shooting 14-31 from the field
good for 45.2%, including 5-12 from behind the arc.
Jesuit's Ben Siefert would go for 12 points, 2-2 from long range, and
hand out 4 assists. The Cardinals would go 6-13 from three point land as
a team.
Jesuit would grab their first lead since the 17 minute mark out of the
break on an easy layup. After trading baskets on a few possessions,
Wheeling would extend their lead on some hot outside shooting taking a
7-point lead, 50-43, with 13:30 left in the second half. UC would fall
behind as many as 12 with seven minutes to go, with Justin Fritts
canning a few triples. Lipkins would get the Eagles within single
digits after an and-1 followed by a deep Faulkner three to draw within
six, 62-56, with 3:24 showing on the clock. Charleston would not get
any closer as Jesuit would close out the game knocking down their free
throws to hold off the Golden Eagles for a 10-point win, 72-62.
The Golden Eagles were led by Humphrey's 19 points and seven rebounds,
followed by solid efforts by Lipkins' 17 points and Dreher's 10 points
and 13 rebounds. Wheeling would have four players in double digits, led
by Fritt's 19 points on 5-for-6 shooting from deep.
