CHARLES TOWN -

The vice president of racing operations for Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races has been selected as one of the Top Ten "impact players" in the thoroughbred racing industry in Blood Horse magazine.

Erich Zimny came to Charles Town as an intern in 2008 after graduating from the University of Arizona's race track industry program and working as a lawyer in New York.

The magazine notes Zimny's role in propelling racing at Hollywood: "Charles Town had a year-round racing program with little national exposure despite paying more than $30 million a year in purses. Zimny … was instrumental in retooling the track's stakes schedule with a focus on ‘big event' programs."

Today, largely due to Zimny's efforts, Charles Town has a "grade II stakes event that will this year carry a total purse of $1.5 million. It trails only the Kentucky Derby … in purse money in North America," the magazine reports.

The article also points out that Zimny has introduced his ideas at fellow Penn National Gaming properties, including Sam Houston Race Park, where the $400,000 Houston Ladies' Classic was run in January, and Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, where the $500,000 Penn Mile will launch in June.
