HARPERS FERRY, WV -

A 24-year-veteran of the National Park Service has been selected superintendent of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail office in Harpers Ferry.

Wendy Janssen has worked management, ranger and planner positions in 11 facilities nationwide, including parks, recreational areas, historical sites and monuments.

The Somerville, N.J., native takes over the position this month. Pamela Underhill retired from the job in November.

Janssen's duties will include supervising 10 employees and working closely with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. It maintains the 2,220-mile hiking trail from Georgia to Maine.

Janssen has been superintendent of the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument and the Minidoka National Historical Site in Idaho for four years.

In the early 2000s, she was a planner in the Harpers Ferry Interpretive Design Center.
