The Islamic Association of West Virginia is asking to be appointed a representative in order to give an appropriate funeral consistent with Islamic traditions to a Kanawha County Muslim man who died last month.
The association and Mahmoud M. Shahbandy, member of the executive committee, filed the petition March 4 in Kanawha County Circuit Court asking to be responsible for the body of Ahmad Fadaie.
Fadaie was born around 1957 in Iran and died Feb. 7 from unknown but natural causes.
Fadaie has no living residents in the United States, the petition states, and no one has stepped forward to claim his body from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
The association notes that Fadaie was born into a Muslim family and "should be buried in accordance with Islamic laws and traditions."
As the representative, the association said it will provide the appropriate Islamic prayer for his funeral.
The association also says it will coordinate with the Charleston funeral home, Bartlet Burdett and Cox, and pay any expenses.
