Ashland city leaders met today in their regular meeting, but a new topic was on the agenda.

Ashland residents passed a vote in a special election that would allow Sunday alcohol sales by the drink at restaurants.

Alcohol and Beverage Control administrator Michelle Merchant says it was the first reading on the ordinance and that some things were amended.

Now they are also looking at changing the ordinance to allow sales of beer, wine, and liquor at private clubs and package stores on Sunday.

If it passes, restaurants would be able to serve drinks from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. Sundays.

Package stores will be able to sell alcohol between 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Sundays.

Merchant says once the ordinance passes and is published, beer sales would start immediately.

For liquor sales, each business would have to get special Sunday sales license from both the city and state.

The ordinance could be approved after a second reading at the next meeting on March 21st.
