Passengers question safety at Charleston Transit Mall

CHARLESTON -

A brutal beating caught on security cameras has some people questioning safety in one part of town.

The Transit Mall in Charleston is not just a hub for bus passengers. It is also a main path through downtown. And some people say that it is a center for crime.

Bus passenger Buffy Jewel says she fears for her safety and avoid the area after dark.

"I don't want to be mugged, robbed, beat or in the hospital," Jewel said.

There are security camera and frequent police patrols in the area.

Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority Assistant General Manager Doug Hartley said the Charleston Police Department does a great job monitoring the area. But he said most of the problems in the area are caused by people loitering and not by bus passengers.
