Charleston student heading to D.C.; scheduled to meet President Obama

Posted: Updated:

Each year the United States Senate Program brings some of the brightest high school students from across the nation to Washington D.C. for a weeklong study of the federal government and the people who lead it.

This year two students from West Virginia have been chosen to participate, including Isaac Jones, who attends Capital High School in Charleston.

The program begins March 9, and continues through March 16, bringing together 104 student delegates to the nation's capitol.

The students are scheduled to greet President Obama and meet with Justice Elena Kagen.

Senators are also personally involved in the program every year. They are invited to meet the students and present a $5,000 college scholarship to those from their states at the annual USSYP Senate Reception held on Wednesday, March 13 from 5-7 p.m. in the Kennedy Caucus Room.

In addition to meeting their Senators, other confirmed speakers during the week include:

  • Secretary of State John Kerry
  • Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood
  • Senator Jeanne Shaheen
  • Senator Richard Burr
  • Congressman Cory Gardner

The program is a partnership of the United States Senate and The Hearst Foundations.
