    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

A shooting in the McDowell area of Floyd county, Kentucky Tuesday ends with one man dead and two people facing murder charges.

Kentucky State Police say they responded to a shooting call in the McDowell area and found two people inside with gunshot wounds.

Famer Halbert and Lorene Halbert were taken to McDowell ARH for gunshot wounds.

Police say the county coroner pronounced Famer Halbert dead, and Lorene Halbert was treated and released for a single gunshot wound.

Ronald Wright was found at Saint Joseph Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds and was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.

Wright is charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Loretta Wright is charged with complicity to murder and was taken to the Floyd County Detention Center.

State police are investigating.
