According to a press release from the Kanawha County Commission, the U.S. Board of Geographical Names (BGN) voted to restore a historical name in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
The town in question is Tornado, in western Kanawha County.
The release added that without consent from any of the citizens or local government, many navigational maps inserted the name Upper Falls instead of the traditional name.
This was brought to the attention of the Kanawha County Commission by a group of concerned citizens.
The Kanawha County Commission held a public meeting on Thursday, February 28th at 5:00pm in the Commission Courtroom to discuss the name change.
Around a dozen citizens, along with Delegate Suzette Raines, Delegate Eric Nelson, Delegate J.B. McCuskey and a representative from Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito's office came to speak on behalf of changing the name back to Tornado.
The Commission's release stated that no one came to represent the name, "Upper Falls".
