State unemployment rate drops to 7.3 percent

New unemployment numbers show fewer West Virginians on unemployment. 

The seasonally adjusted rate dropped to 7.3 percent in February, according to WorkForce West Virginia. 

The report details the states unemployment situation as follows: 

  • 1,400 fewer West Virginia residents were unemployed. The total number is now 58,800.
  • The total number of unemployed was up 2,700 compared to February 2012.
  • West Virginia is faring better than the national average, which is still at 7.7 percent.
  • Mining, logging and construction added 900 jobs.
  • Manufacturing lost 200 jobs.
  • The government added 1,000 jobs. 
  • 600 education and health service jobs were added.
  • Leisure and hospitality added 200 jobs.
  • Business services lost 200 jobs. 

Without being seasonally adjusted, the states unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent.
