CHARLESTON -
Rhonda Stewart has been sentenced to 10 years of home confinement for shooting her husband in a hospital bed.
Stewart admitted to walking into CAMC hospital in June 2009 and shooting her husband in a hospital bed.
In a sentencing hearing Tuesday, Stewart apologized for the shooting. She claimed she was out of her mind at the time of the shooting.
Samantha Stewart, Stewart's daughter, took the stand and discussed the abuse she saw at the hands of her father. She detailed "rage" from her father toward her mother. She told the court that she supports her mother.
Psychiatrist Christy Cooper-Lehki testified that Stewart suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and dependent personality disorder. Lehki said that Stewart had been abused by her husband. Rhonda likely knew right from wrong at the time of the shooting. Lehki testified it could have been Stewart's plan to kill herself at the hospital.
The sentence also takes into account four years of time served. Stewart will have a remaining six years on home confinement, the minimum possible for the 2nd degree murder charge.
